When people bring their new pets home for the first time, it can be a shock to the system that they don’t immediately do what you say. Any animal will need a settling in period and time to get to know you and your home. They also need to learn what is right and wrong, and which of their natural behaviour is acceptable. Well trained dogs are much easier to care for and cause much less damage to your home.
An important lesson a dog owner needs to learn is to interpret their body language. A dog’s body language is a vital tool to communicate how they are feeling, whether that be scared, happy or excited. A dog’s bark and other noises are another way of them expressing themselves. Wagging a tail could mean the dog is happy, but it might mean that they are scared and could be aggressive. Tail wagging wide and fast normally means they’re happy, if it straight, then they may be more cautious. However, if the tail is high and stiff, then they could be aggressive. A tail between the legs may mean that the dog is scared. Training will help the owner to recognise what all the noises and body language means and take the necessary action.
A puppy does not understand what the correct behavior is, so training him will be a lengthy process but one which will be rewarding for both you and the puppy, and will be the beginning of a strong bond between you and your pet.
