Pets, just like humans, can put on extra weight and it isn’t necessarily due to the animal feed that is being served, although it does play an important role. It is vital for animals to get a certain amount of exercise, either through play around the house or by being outside. An inactive pet could be more prone to overeating, which when taken alongside the lack of exercise, could be is contributing to increases in weight. The method of feeding the pet will also play a huge role in how they are approaching food. Bringing structure to meal times can help those animals who have trouble stopping eating when they are full. If food is only available at certain times, this could bring about an improvement in weight management. Some other animals will stop eating when they are full, and as such, food can be available for them as and when they want it. Making food available for specific periods of time can bring the pet into line with the owner’s desires when it comes to feeding. They will learn that they have to eat before the food is taken which is an effective way of bringing structure to diet.
Mixing pet foods can however be where the problems lie. These foods are often very specifically balanced and by mixing the two, the owner may be unwittingly giving their pet a high dose of a particular substance. One brand and type of food should ultimately be settled on.
