Many more pet owners these days are choosing to feed their animals raw food diets. Whilst these diets can be beneficial in some circumstances they carry with them a number of concerns which responsible pet owners would do well to make themselves aware of.
Contamination
Contamination is a major concern for anyone who is preparing raw pet food in their home. Whilst conscientious individuals will no doubt know to handle raw meat and clean their worktops and bowls; they will not be able to account for the live e-coli and salmonella contained within animal feces which can be tracked back into the house from outdoor areas and/or litter trays.
Balance
Not being experts, it is difficult for pet owners to know exactly how much calcium, thiamine or ta urine to feed their pets. Naturally, not including enough essential nutrients can be a health risk to a pet, as can overdosing on others. Indeed, toxicity can occur when an owner feeds their pet an unbalanced diet over an extended period of time. For example, a pet cat may develop anemia due to a lack or excess of essential nutrients, whilst orthopedic issues such as bone fractures may affect a canine that eats an unbalanced diet.
Quite simply, pet owners who are concerned about their pet’s nutrition should opt for a packaged food which has quality ingredients rather than switch to a raw food diet and take a chance on compromising their pet’s (as well as their own) health.
