Pet nutrition is an important part of keeping an animal healthy and in fact, it could be a very good way to learn how to keep ourselves healthy as well. While we may weigh our pet frequently, we don’t do this for ourselves despite the benefits that could, as a result, be attributed to our pets. They may also benefit from pet foods that are specifically adapted for different tastes and requirements whereas we might decide that we should be eating certain foods without as much thought. For instance, it is always good to have a supply of fresh water that a pet can always access when they are thirsty. We don’t always do the same, often preferring to drink soda in favour of straight water or even relying on food and alcoholic drinks to deliver the amount of water that we really need.
Pets don’t have this sort of choice so it is always important to have a supply of fresh water near their food. This is because they can only tolerate losing as much as 15% of their body water whereas they can lose up to a half of their body weight. Any more than the 15% of their body water loss could be enough to kill the animal. This must be understood in the context of the animal’s natural weight for its species which is often information that a vet or pet store can give. The best advice is to always have a fresh supply that an animal can dip into when necessary.
