It’s no secret that dogs and cats are intelligent animals. However, there is still some dispute about the nature of this intelligence. Animals are proven to have various sophisticated systems of communication, however they lack the human ability of speech. So, intelligence becomes something slightly harder to explain.
Speaking of speech, and whilst dogs and cats don’t have the anatomy we have to vocalise words, they can be taught to understand a certain amount of vocabulary. Dogs especially are shown to have this skill, and they are able to learn around 200 words, which is the same amount as a young child.
Whilst vocabulary skills are obviously very impressive they are arguably not playing to an animal’s strengths. Instead, dogs and cats have lots of natural abilities which can be trained and improved. The sheepdog is a prime example if this, and their natural control and problem solving abilities would rival any humans.
There are ways to make your pet more intelligent and more communicative. For example, you should endeavour to create an environment that is stimulating and exciting. Also, you need to spend as much time as possible with your pet, playing and learning, as you are the best arbiter for their intelligence. And finally, make sure you give your pet quality pet food, which will help the development of their brains.
