Post traumatic stress disorder can be crippling for those who are suffering from it. Being able to treat somebody who is suffering can alleviate significant amounts of mental anguish which has very real physical and social implications. One of the most proven and innovative ways of treating this disorder is through Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which is a form of psychotherapy that is endorsed by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence. The PTSD training will begin with a background as to how EDMR came about and what its purpose is. Understanding this is key since it reveals the hidden nature of the brain and the way that information is dealt with, with particular concern for what different parts of it do, such as the Amygdala.
Students will also learn about the AIP model, which stands for Adaptive Information Processing, while also learning about how to build up a trauma history while assessing contraction indications. An understanding of dissociation is also very important as the trainee comes to understand more and more about the concept and how it works. Being able to deal with certain problems such as ab-reactions and blocked processing will prove instrumental in becoming a versatile EDMR therapist who can really be effective when treating patients. As the course progresses there will be time to develop skills in a more practical way which is vital when learning to deal with a variety of different situations. This will be integrated with the theoretical and visual learning aspects of the course to create a rounded understanding.
