As the winter sets in, there are certain steps that pet owners will need to take to ensure that their animals stay healthy and happy. For example those with outdoor pets may well find that they are best off keeping their animals indoors over the winter months to ensure the colder weather doesn’t leave them ill or uncomfortable.
For cat owners, this may involve buying a litter tray, but this will certainly be worth it as, even though they have plenty of fur, their domestic lifestyle leaves them far less prepared for colder weather than their wild relatives. Just as we would not like to spend all day and night outside in just a fur coat, our animal’s fur will do little to keep them comfortable for long periods of time.
Consider offering more food to your pet over the winter too. Not only will a little extra weight help protect against the cold, but any pup or kitten will also need far more energy over the winter too. However, if you notice your pet is exercising less due to the cold, the reverse might be true and therefore keeping an eye on how active they are and how much energy they have will be vital in informing how much you give them to eat.
It may also be time to consider clothes for your pooch. Whilst you might not want to dress them up, a small coat on particularly cold days may help them feel inclined to exercise and stay healthy whilst boots may be good for those in areas with lots of grit salt since such chemicals can be harsh on the paws.
