One of the key advantages of wood flooring is that it is tough, durable and will probably last a lifetime. However, this doesn’t mean wood floors won’t benefit from some degree of care. Inappropriate care and maintenance of your wooden flooring could potentially damage its luster and shorten its lifespan. Here are some tips:
Firstly, you need to be very careful about what cleaning products you use. Some, in fact most, chemicals can be very damaging to the surface of wood floors, such as products that contain ammonia. Even soapy water could have a damaging effect and should only be used in rare circumstances.
Wearing shoes on wooden floors could over time cause damage and scuffs. It depends on the shoe really, and smart shoes like heels or brogues are more likely to leave scuff marks, which can be extremely difficult to remove.
If you have pets you need to ensure their nails are trimmed, ideally. The sound of a dog’s nails tapping on the floor can be very annoying and it may also cause scratching damaging the veneer of your wood floor.
Water is generally the biggest danger and exposure to water could lead to warping of the wood. Even rugs and mats, which can protect wooden floors, can trap water under them so you need to be vigilant. Also, when spillages occur you should clean them up with a dry cloth/paper towel if possible.
