The internet is becoming a more visual medium all the time and this is evidenced by the fact that Google are now committed and better prepared to index Flash-based websites; however, talking generally, the internet is still predominantly a text based medium.
Why can we say this? Firstly, language is the most effective way that people communicate information, especially specific information. As such, for the internet to remain effective as an informational resource it relies on text. Pictures can be very attractive, but they lack the specific informational focus of text.
As we’ve already mentioned, Google is getting better all the time at indexing more aesthetic, visual sites; however, it is still easier to communicate your relevance to the search engine using text on your site, i.e. one or two relevant keywords.
When You Come To Use Text On Your Site Bear The Following In Mind:
- Ensure that content is well written.
- Split content into easily readable paragraphs, of around three, four or five lines each.
- Use subheadings in order to break up information, making it more scan-able.
- Use a font that’s easy to read.
- Avoid colourful fonts which can undermine the readability of your text.
- Make sure that you use but don’t overuse relevant keywords. Overuse of keywords is a spam trait.
