A dog is a great addition to a family. They make great pets, bringing joy, fun and excitement into their owners’ lives. But getting a pet is a huge commitment. Before getting a dog, potential owners need to make sure that they are ready for the responsibility. Before getting a dog for their family, there are a number of things that potential owners should consider:
Size
Size is an important consideration when choosing a dog. Large breeds of dog will need more space in the home and garden in order to live comfortably. They may also need to eat more, which could mean regular trips to the animal shop to stock up on food. Also, larger dogs can be more difficult to handle. The owner should take their dog for a walk, not vice-versa!
Coat Length
Ever breed of dog has a different type of coat with hair of varying lengths. Long-haired dogs require daily grooming to get rid of hair, whereas short-haired breeds may only need grooming once a week. Owners should consider whether they have the time to commit to a long-haired dog.
Age
Potential pet owner should think carefully about whether they want a puppy or an older dog. Puppies are full of energy, but they can be boisterous and badly behaved until they are trained. Older dogs are generally calmer and require less exercise, but it might take them a little longer to settle in with a family.
