There is one issue which many dog owners fail to agree on: which type of pet food is best – wet or dry?
Well, the truth is that there is no clear answer, as the success of a food will depend largely on an individual dog’s own preferences and circumstances. Indeed, whilst one dog might benefit greatly from a diet consisting mainly of dry food; another may do just as well from eating nothing but wet food.
Of course, each type of food is able to offer a number of unique benefits.
Dry Foods
Dry dog food costs less per serving than semi-moist or wet foods and its nutrients are more concentrated, therefore less food is needed to fill up a canine. The reason for this is that dry food, unsurprisingly, contains less moisture. In fact, the moisture content of dry dog foods is around 6% to 10% (15% to 30% for semi-moist), whilst wet food is around 75%.
Wet Food
The higher moisture content of wet food makes it a particularly good choice for dogs with urinary tract problems. Moreover, wet food can often be beneficial for overweight dogs as it can provide a greater volume of food for the same amount of calories. Whilst some dry foods are designed to help clean a dog’s teeth during chewing, dogs with severe dental problems often find moist pet foods to be more palatable.
Quite simply, the food that works best is the best choice of food.
