Difference between phone covers and skins

For many people who own a mobile phone, having a customized cover is essential. One of the main reasons why personalized covers are popular is that it gives a phone owner the opportunity to reflect their own personalities. Everything from precious photographs to a romantic poem can be used to make a phone unique. There are a couple of options though when choosing an iPhone 4 case, and these are phone covers or phone skins.

Covers

A cover is a clip-on jacket for the handset which generally overlays just the front part of the phone. These are usually made from a hard plastic material and offer a mobile phone a large degree of protection from damage. A case is ideal if the phone owner is likely to drop the phone or put it under a lot of stress, such as it being used in an industrial or other work environment.

A phone skin is generally made from a thin layer of vinyl which covers both the front and back of the phone. These types of iPhone covers are mainly for decorative purposes and are not usually designed to protect the phone; they would not safeguard the mobile if, for instance, it was dropped, though they could protect it from minor scratches. A phone skin however, will not detract from the shape of a phone and does not ‘bulk up’ the handset which can help make them easier to carry or store. Both a cover and a skin can be customised.
