There are a lot of safety training courses out there. They range from basic health and safety training to maritime, and understanding which ones offer valid training and which do not is critical.
Why Safety Training Matters
By law, companies are required to train their staff in health and safety procedures. They also have to be able to demonstrate that they have done so. Failure to train staff properly can result in fines. If there is a serious accident and a firm cannot demonstrate that staff have been properly trained in health and safety they can be prosecuted.
The right safety training course can keep staff safe and fulfill a company’s legal obligations. These courses are not cheap, so they are not something a firm wants to put their staff through more than once.
The Right Course
Key staff need to complete at least a basic health and safety training course. That course needs to be properly accredited to be recognized by the authorities. NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) is a good example of a course that meets this standard.
Some industries are more dangerous than others are. Those who work in dangerous industries such as agriculture, construction, shipping and fossil fuel extraction need additional, industry specific training.
For example, someone who works at sea needs specialist maritime training. Everyone who works at sea has to, by law, take a STCW95 safety at sea course. Ships security officers need additional training. In some cases, their safety training needs to include anti-piracy training.
