Cold weather isn’t the nicest at the best of times, least of all when you have a baby to breastfeed. Some may prefer to simply not breastfeed if they are out in the cold, as it can cause painful nipples, but for those who do want to continue, there are ways of making it more comfortable.
Of course, your little one will be wrapped up nice and snug, and you should be too. However, don’t think that you have to struggle with awkward clothing; there are plenty of warm, knitted breastfeeding clothes that allow easier breastfeeding whilst also keeping you warm.
You don’t have to sacrifice style, however. You may well be surprised at how good some of these nursing clothes actually look and to the untrained eye; many will look like regular clothes. A popular and flattering design is an empire cut, which is perfect for hiding those post-natal tummies should you so wish.
A nursing poncho is also an excellent idea, as this will provide an extra layer of warmth for you and your baby and will also offer privacy should you want it. Also, always look for top quality breastfeeding clothing to ensure it’s soft and non-itchy to reduce irritation for you and your child. It might also help to wear breast pads for both pre- and post-feeding, ensuring that as soon as your baby comes off, the pad is replaced to keep you as warm as possible,
So, with a little bit of preparation and the right clothing, breastfeeding when it’s cold needn’t be difficult.
