If you’re thinking about getting your first pet, you might have some misgivings and doubts about being able to look after it properly. While it’s true that pets can be hard work, they can also be extremely rewarding, so here are a few tips to get you started and ease those worries.
1. Choose Wisely
Think about your current home, family and lifestyle and make sure you choose a pet which fits in with that wisely. Also think carefully about your budget. Pets can be expensive, with the highest costs going on pet food and veterinary bills. Don’t choose a huge Alsatian if you don’t have the funds to put towards his nutritional needs!
2. Provide Training
You can’t expect your new pet to walk into a new environment and feel completely at home. Nor can you expect to train him overnight. Get some tips from friends and experts and spend time training your new addition to the family. Be careful not to punish or criticize bad behavior, but to reinforce positive and good behavior instead.
3. Keep It Clean
You’ll soon notice a change to your home after a few days of owning your pet. You’ll need to keep both your pet and his living areas (cage, kennel, bed, tray…) clean, but also the rest of your home too. A good tip for removing unwanted pet hair from upholstery is to use a dry sponge to wipe it away.
4. Provide Stimulation
Just like humans, pets need stimulation, so make sure you buy him plenty of toys to play with.
