It is fair to say that not everyone will have enjoyed the past 12 months. However, a new year should mean a new start in life and if you want to improve your future you would do well to look into the benefits of EMDR training. EMDR stands for ‘Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing’ and is a type of therapy that was first introduced to the wider public by the American clinical psychologist Dr Francine Shapiro in the 1980”s.
An EMDR course offers several powerful psychological benefits. The treatment has been scientifically proven to be extremely effective at treating severe psychological trauma issues which may have been brought on by circumstances such as experience in war combat, childhood abuse or neglect, sexual abuse, natural disasters, road traffic accidents, work related disasters, and physical or mental assaults.
In normal day-to-day life, our bodies usually process sensory information through an emotional filter in our brains which is called the Amygdala. This information is then passed through the Hippo campus structure which processes the information for time and space properties before allowing it to travel to the left hemisphere of the brain.
However, when sensory information is received through traumatic experiences, it gets stuck in the Central Nervous System in the brain’s right hemisphere and the information does not get processed properly. This can lead to the stuck memory being triggered by certain events which accounts for many of the symptoms of PTSD. EMDR seeks to restore normal ways of dealing with problems.
