Tiling is a task which people seem to steer away from, though if planned well and carried out sensibly, it is a very satisfying job to do. Ahead of anything else of course, is to make sure the right hand tools are available.
The Basics
To ensure any tiling job goes well, the basics are important. Vital things to have handy include a heavy duty cut and snap tool, wall tile spacers, a notched trowel, tile files, grout spreader and silicone sealants. It’s also important to have health & safety equipment such as a dust mask and eye protection.
It will also be necessary to have the tiles of course. The number needed should be carefully measured and double-checked. An extra five per cent is good to have on hand too.
Dry Run first
Planning how the tiles will look before placing them on the wall is important. Laying them out on a floor beforehand and getting a good symmetrical design will help. Using a wooden batten to mark the positions on the wall is sensible.
Tiling The Wall
When it comes to fixing tiles into place, it pays to work in smaller spaces. Working on a metre square of space at a time will ensure the adhesive does not set. Having firmly pushed the tiles in, any excess adhesive should be quickly scraped away.
Grouting
Before grouting and sealing, it is essential that the adhesive is allowed to dry fully. Again, grouting should be limited to a small area and any excess thoroughly cleaned off.
