A good collection of power tools can help blitz through work around the home. However, building up a collection is likely to take time. It is, therefore, important to priorities what’s needed. The electric hammer drill is often first on the list when it comes to building a tool kit.
The Beneficial Features
Put simply, an electric hammer drill will usually become one of the most important pieces of kit in a toolbox. Perfect for drilling into any number of materials, it is important to make sure it has certain features: Hammer action will allow for easier drilling through materials such as concrete and brick. Reverse action, as the name suggests, allows for screws to be removed as well as inserted. Also, a variable speed feature will allow the speed to be precisely controlled; ensuring efficient and safe working.
Mains or Battery Powered?
The choice over whether to buy a cordless or plug-in hammer drill is all about personal preference. There is little difference in the performance of the two, though both have advantages and disadvantages. A mains-powered tool will benefit from continuous power and will usually be cheaper to buy in the first place. The cord, however, can mean the tool is slightly restrictive to work with. A battery-powered drill will be portable and useful in tighter spaces but might have less power and will inevitably cost more.
If buying any cordless power tool, a spare battery is usually a good idea. This will ensure that there are no breaks in power during a job. If buying mains powered, an extension lead will also make things easier.
