Protective clothing suppliers create body armour for very specific threats, threats which must be weighed up carefully before entering into a hazardous zone. They can provide protection against ballistic, blast and fragment threats, but will often be specifically adapted to a particular one. Armour can typically deal with spike, knife and needle threats, but not necessarily with ballistic threats. The age old problem is that the more protection the body has, the harder it is to move. This trade-off has benefitted from modern technologies quite considerably but the same issues haven’t been completely diminished. Comfort is however a factor that has greatly improved the wearer’s experience, particularly with heavier armour.
Turtleskin is a well known and trusted manufacturer of armour products. They run services which can offer bespoke tailoring for each individual officer, thereby increasing the comfort and manoeuvrability. Even their stab vests do not seriously compromise the operative’s ability to move freely. The Metal Flex Armour is a lightweight option that can offer protection from multiple different stabbing instruments.
Its flexibility allows for give and body contouring while also maintaining the same levels of resilience demonstrated by hard plate armours. It must however be stressed that many of these manoeuvrable armours are not an all-round protectors – stab protection doesn’t mean ballistic protection. For those applications heavier armours are typically required, which may also slow down the operative so much that they become impractical to even deploy. These can however be combined with gloves and t-shirts that offer some versatile protection.
