You might think that the way an office space looks doesn’t really matter, and that it’s the way the space performs which is the most important thing. Function and aesthetics is of course closely linked, and the best performing space will tend to be the most aesthetic. This isn’t a hard and fast rule but you’ll see that it tends to be true.
Let’s think about worker morale. Workers obviously work best, are more communicative and confident, when they have high morale. We all know that the quality of how a room or other space looks will affect how you feel, and this is backed up by scientific study. Therefore we can say that the better an environment looks the more amenable it will be to the wellbeing and productivity of staff.
A good example of this is the use of greenery in an office space. Real greenery can affect air quality in a space and so enhance productivity in this way; however, even artificial floral arrangements and trailing plants will have a positive effect, because they are aesthetically the same as the real deal. Of course an artificial plant is much easier to care for than a real plant.
There are plenty more ways to improve how office space looks, besides just getting a plant real or fake. Recycling is a big deal these days, and rightly so. Not only can a recycling system save your business money but it is also a great way to reduce unsightly mess and waste. Obviously it’s also very good for the environment.
There is a whole business based on hiding cables and wires and all sorts of things you can do to limit this particular problem. For instance, you can use cable hiding systems or simply tie cables together which reduces the unsightly nature of loose wires. Using these cable management systems can also make environments easier to navigate and safer.
Organisation is generally the key to keeping an office looking great. Ensure that all employees are committed to organisation and give them the right tools to implement it, such as filing cabinets etc. If employees don’t have the right amount of storage gear then they are more likely to maintain order.
Of course the products that you use in an office space will help to determine how a space will look. For example, if you choose high quality computer tables and chairs then your office will generally look high quality too.
You might consider something relatively dramatic such as making a closed plan office into an open plan office. This can work really well depending on the nature of your business, for instance open plan offices are ideal where there is a need for communication between employees. An open plan office might also look more attractive.
If you can’t afford to redesign an office to make it more aesthetic, then perhaps concentrate on the reception space, this is the space that leaves a first impression with visitors and is therefore very important.
